Oldest criminal gang (average age)

In March 2009, a group of British pensioners having an average age of 57, the oldest being 83 years old, pleaded guilty to counterfeiting charges and are expecting jail sentences. Oldest continuous ice core

The oldest continuous ice core covers 740,000 years of climate history. It measures 3,139 m (10,298 ft) in length and is 10 cm (4 in) in diameter. It was drilled at Dome C, Antarctica by the ten-nation EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) and announced on 9 June 2004.

Oldest fossilised raindrops

On 15 December 2001, Indian geologist Chirananda De announced his discovery of the fossilised imprints of raindrops in ancient rocks in the lower Vindhyan range, Madhya Pradesh state, India. These rocks prove that rain fell on Earth at least 1.6 billion years ago.

Oldest fossilised animal food store

In November 2003 a team of scientists from the University of Bonn, Germany, announced their discovery of a 17 million-year-old fossilised rodent burrow containing more than 1,200 fossilised nuts. The animal responsible was probably a hamster or a squirrel. The team was led by Dr Carole Gee (Germany) and the work was published in the journal Palaeontology.

Louise Delany’s second book, The Delany Sisters’ Book of Everyday Wisdom, was published by Kodansha America in October 1994, when she was 105 years old. Her sister and co-author, A. Elizabeth Delany, was 103. A. Elizabeth Delany died in September 1995.

Oldest father

The oldest ever man to father a child was reportedly Les Colley (1898 – 1998, Australia), who had his ninth child a son named Oswald to his third wife at the age of 92 years 10 months. Colley met Oswald’s Fijian mother in 1991 through a dating agency at the age of 90. “I never thought she would get pregnant so easy, but she bloody well did,” he told newspaper reporters.

Oldest explosive

As early as the 13th century AD, ‘black powder’ was in use in Europe. This mixture of charcoal, potassium nitrate and sulphur is the oldest explosive in the world and was not superceded until 1866 when Alfred Nobel was first able to control nitroglycerine.

Oldest horse stables

The world’s oldest horse stables were established by the Egyptian pharaoh, Ramses II (1304-1237 BC) to breed horses for war, hunting and recreation. They were discovered in early 1999 by a joint German-Egyptian archeologicial team headed by Edgar Pusch (Germany) in the ancient city of Piramesse, in the Nile Delta, Egypt. The stables are also believed to be the largest, covering approximately 17,000 m² (182,986 ft²) and housing 460 horses at one time.
