Longest-lasting thunderstorms

Supercells are powerful thunderstorms which form around a mesocyclone, a deep, rotating updraft. At up to several kilometres across, they can last several hours, making them the longest-lasting and largest of all thunderstorms. They often occur on the Great Plains of the USA and can spawn tornadoes.

Longest-standing maths problem (ever)

Andrew Wiles (UK), currently at Princeton University in New Jersey, USA, proved Fermat’s Last Theorem in 1995. He showed that xn+yn=zn has no solutions in integers for n being equal to or greater than 3. The theorum was posed by Fermat in 1630, and stood for 365 years.

Longest-standing maths problem (current)

Since the 1995 proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, a problem which stood for 365 years, the current longest-standing maths problem is the conjecture posed by Christian Goldbach (1690-1764), a Russian mathematician, in 1742. Goldbach’s Conjecture states that every even positive integer greater than 3 is the sum of two (not necessarily distinct) primes. No one has succeeded in proving or disproving the validity of this conjecture in 257 years. Mathematicians worldwide hold the Riemann Hypothesis of 1859 (posed by German mathematician Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866)) as Continue reading →

The lowest resting heart beat on record is 27 bpm belonging to Martin Brady (UK, b. 24 March 1969) who was tested at the Guernsey Chest and Heart Unit, Channel Islands on 11 August 2005.

Lowest barometric pressure

A figure of 870 millibar (25.69 in) was recorded on 12 Oct 1979 by the US Air Weather Service 483 km (300 miles) west of Guam in the Pacific Ocean in the eye of Super Typhoon Tip which involved wind speeds of 165 kts (305 km/h; 190 mph). Barometric pressure is the physical pressure exerted by all of the air above you.
