The oldest pet cockatiel, ‘Pretty Boy’ was born on 17 September 1975 in Brunswick, Ohio, USA and belongs to Catherine Masarin of Hinckley, Ohio, USA. On the day the claim was recommended for approval (03/11/2003) “Pretty Boy” was 28 years 47 days old. Sadly, ‘Pretty Boy’ is no longer with us and passed away in 2004.
The oldest operated cinema chain is Wehrenberg Theatres, first set up in 1906 with the opening of the Cherokee Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, by former blacksmith Fred Wehrenberg (USA). Still run by the Wehrenberg family, it currently operates 15 cinemas in Missouri and Illinois.
The oldest ‘showgirl’ is Glenda Guilfoyle (USA, b. 26 June 1933), who regularly performs in the chorus line of The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, Palm Springs, California, USA. Dorothy Kloss retired from the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies in May 2010. Glenda Guilfoyle is 76 years, 11 months, 2 days at the time of taking the record. Glenda was a Rockette, was personally selected by Walt DIsney to open Disneyland in 1955 for the Park’s “Golden Horseshoe Revue”, and had seven children!
The world’s oldest convicted bank robber is J.L. Hunter Rountree (b. 1911, USA) who was sentenced to 151 months in prison on 23 January 2004 at the age of 92 after he pleaded guilty to robbing $1,999 (£1,243.08) from a bank in Texas, USA on 12 August 2003. The computer mouse was invented by Douglas Engelbart (USA) in 1964. He was awarded a US patent for it in 1970. It was described in the patent as an ‘X-Y position indicator for a display system’ and was nicknamed a mouse because of the resemblance of the wire to a tail.
The record for the oldest documented age for a donkey belongs to Suzy, who reached 54 years old in 2002. Suzy was owned by Beth Augusta Menczer (USA) and lived in Glenwood, New Mexico, USA. Suzy died in 2002, during her 54th year. Suzy was originally bought in 1949 as a yearling (thus born in 1948) and lived on Moon Ranch, New Mexico until 1968. The oldest examples of footwear which have been accurately dated directly from the shoes themselves are ‘Fort Rock’ type sandals, ten of which have been carbon-dated to ages between 9,300 – 10,500 years old. These distinctive shoes are made of sagebrush, and likely to have been worn by native North Americans.
