It can grow 6 m in its first year, and as much as 30 cm in three weeks. Native to central and west China, but naturalised now in the USA, this large species also produces 3-4 times more oxygen during photosynthesis than any other known species of tree.

According to the RHS Dictionary of Gardening, there are approximately 1,000 species of bamboos.
