The longest ribbon used in a ribbon-cutting ceremony measured 5.51 miles (8.86 km) and was used by the state of New Jersey (USA) to re-open the Jersey Shore in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, USA, on 24 May 2013. The re-opening of the Jersey Shore occurred nearly seven months after the area was devastated by 2012’s Hurricane Sandy. The ribbon began on the beach’s coastline and concluded on the famous Seaside Heights boardwalk. New Jersey governor Chris Christie held the honors of cutting the ribbon.
The world’s largest living turtle, the leatherback sea turtle also holds the record for the longest migration of any reptile. Between 2006 and early 2008, a tagged leatherback was tracked by satellite as it made a 20,558 km (12,774 mi) journey from its nesting site on the beaches of Papua, Indonesia, to feeding grounds off the coast of the U.S. state of Oregon. The journey, to the other side of the planet, took the intrepid turtle 647 days to complete.
On 3 October 2010, Germany paid the final £59 million part of its war reparations as compensation and punishment for the First World War (1914-1918). The annual Tour du Léman à l’Aviron is the longest rowing race in the world, covering 160 km (99 mi) around the circumference of Lake Léman in Switzerland – equivalent to crossing the sea between England and France five times without a break. The fastest race time on record is 11 hr 55 min 19 sec, achieved by Matthias Auer, Olaf Behrend, Jochen Domscheit, Christian Klandt and Markus Neuman (all Germany), who won the men’s coxed fours category in the 2007 race.
A row of 4,077 firefighters with spraying fire hoses was formed along a 16.4 km (10.1 m) stretch of the Mosel river, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, on 15 September 2007 in an event coordinated by the Jugendfeuerwehr Rheinland-Pfalz. The firemen sprayed the hoses for half an hour from 1:00 to 1:30, using mark ‘c’ hoses.The attempt took place in order to raise funds to build a school in Ruanda.
