Most resistant insect

The most insecticide-resistant insect is considered to be the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) which has been documented as being resistant to 71 different chemical pesticides. They are approximately 2.3 mm (0.09 in) long when fully grown and vary in colour from green to pale yellow or pink. Aphids feed by sucking the juices of plants and the green peach is the most common aphid in the United States. They were first discovered in Europe in the late 18th century.

Most reflective body in the Solar System

The most reflective body in the Solar System is Enceladus, a small moon of Saturn. It reflects some 90% of the sunlight that illuminates it, making it more reflective than freshly-fallen snow. Enceladus’ surface is composed of icy material, and its lack of craters, relative to other Saturnian moons suggests that geological activity, such as cryovolcanism, has occurred within the last few hundred million years, and possibly occurs still today. Enceladus as a diameter of 498 km (309 miles).

Most recently identified carnivore

Environmental researchers are hoping to capture what some believe may be a new species of carnivore on Borneo, which if correct would be the first such discovery on the island since that of the Borneo ferret-badger in 1895. The animal, which looks like a cross between a cat and a fox was photographed in the mountainous rainforests of the Kayan Mentarang National Park in 2003, but was kept unpublished as research continued. Some researchers suggested that it might be a viverrid – the family which Continue reading →

Most recent tribal “first contact”

There are around 100 known but uncontacted tribes in the world, and the most recent to make contact was a sub-group of the Ayoreo-Totobiegosode peoples of the Chaco, a forest stretching from Paraguay to Bolivia and Argentina. In March 2004, a group of 17 Indians – five men, seven women and five children – were forced from the Paraguay forest after cattle ranchers forcibly colonized their territory and occupied their waterholes. The most recently discovered tribe yet to be contacted is a group of at Continue reading →

Most recent test of a nuclear bomb

The most recent nuclear test took place at 0054 hours GMT on 25 May 2009 in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) or, more usually, North Korea. According to the US Geological Survey the underground explosion had a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale with a centre about 70 km (43 miles) northwest of Kimchaek and close to the site of the North Korean nuclear test that took place in 2006. Russian experts believe the yield to have been between 10 and 20 Continue reading →
