Most yo-yos spun simultaneously

Ben McPhee (USA) was able to keep a total of sixteen yo-yos spinning simultaneously at the Toy Fair, Olympia, London, on 26 January 2010. Ben managed to spin 10 yo-yos on a hook, 2 on his ears, 2 with his mouth and 2 with his hands. The attempt was made in conjunction with the Esdevium Games event.

Most yo-yo tricks (one minute)

The record for the most yo-yo tricks completed in one minute is 51 and was set by Hans Van Dan Helzen (USA) on the set of Blue Peter at BBC Television Centre, London, UK on 17 May 2004. The attempt was adjudicated by Arron Sparks, the Director and Head Judge of the British Yo Yo Association.

Most yo-yo eli hops in 30 seconds

The most yo-yo eli hops completed in 30 seconds is 71 and was achieved by Hiroyuki Suzuki (Japan) on the set of Shiawase no Kiiroi Koinu in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, on 19 December 2009. Hiroyuki broke his own record. A ‘Eli Hop’ is performed by landing a trapeze and tossing the yo-yo upward and letting the hands come together and touch and then separate them and catch the yo-yo again in a trapeze with the hands touching after each hop.

Most yoghurt eaten in one minute

The most yoghurt eaten in one minute is 1.08 kg (2 lb 6.2 oz) and was achieved by Ashrita Furman (USA) at the Panorama Café in New York, New York, USA, on 1 March 2011. Ashrita ate more than an entire 32-oz container of plain yoghurt during the attempt.

Most yellow cards issued in a FIFA World Cup championship match

The most yellow cards issued in a FIFA World Cup championship match is 14 in Spain’s 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 11 July 2010. Nine were given to Dutch players (including two on John Heitinga, resulting in a red and expulsion) and five to Spanish. The previous record had been just six, in the deciding game between West Germany and Argentina in 1986.

Newest amphibians

The discovery of three new species of amphibian was announced in 25 November 2010. Native to the rainforests of Choco in western Colombia and still awaiting formal scientific names and descriptions, they are a previously unknown species of toad with ruby-coloured eyes, a new species of rocket frog with bright red flashes on its legs, and a small new toad with a long beak that hides away in dead leaves. Unusually for such creatures, they were all found to be active during the daytime.

Nearest Red supergiant

Betelgeuse, in the constellation of Orion, lies just 427 light years from the Solar System. Like all red supergiants, it is a massive star nearing the end of its relatively short lifespan of perhaps just a few million years in total. It has a mass of around 14 times that of the Sun and varies in size between around 400 and 600 times the Sun’s diameter.
