The oldest female person to paraglide tandem is Mary Allen Hardison (USA) who was 101 years old when she completed a tandem paraglide in Draper, Utah, USA on 1 September 2011. Mary decided to take the jump to celebrate her 101st birthday and is also keen to be able to do the jump again.
The oldest person to obtain a pilot’s licence is James Collins Warren (b. 16 August 1923, USA) at the age of 87 years old, in Vacaville, California, USA, in September 2010. Retired Lt. Col. James C. Warren is a former navigator of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces.
The oldest person to have a total hip replacement was John Randall (UK, b. 16 July 1909) who had a revision left total hip replacement at the age of 102 years, 3 months and 30 days. The operation was performed by Mr Ajit Shetty, Mr Ashad Lateef and Dr Patrick O’Connor at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, UK on 15 November 2011.
Edith Dewhurst (b.24 Feb 1895), of Stockport, Greater Manchester, received a hip replacement at the age of 103 at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport on 19 Nov 1998. Edith Dewshurst underwent partial hip replacement for her right hip fracture.
An X-ray photo revealed that Timotheus Louw (South Africa, b. 27 June 1922) was growing a wisdom tooth in his top left gum at the age of 80 years 216 days on 29 January 2003. The new tooth was originally thought to have been a splinter.
The oldest mother is Maria del Carmen Bousada Lara (Spain, b. 5 January 1940), who gave birth by caesarean section to twin boys, Christian and Pau, aged 66 years 358 days at the Sant Pau hospital, Barcelona, Spain on 29 December 2006. Unfortunately, Maria passed away on Saturday 11 July 2009 after being diagnosed with cancer.
Simon Murray (UK, b. 25 March 1940) completed an unsupported overland trek to the South Pole at the age of 63 years 309 days. He departed from a point on the Antarctic coastline near Hercules Inlet on 2 December 2003 and arrived at the Pole with his trekking partner, Pen Hadow (UK) on 28 January 2004. The oldest person to swim the English Channel is Roger Allsopp (UK, b. 6 April 1941) who crossed from Shakespeare beach, Dover, UK, to the bay of Calais, France in 17 hr 51 min 19 sec aged 70 years 4 months on 30 August 2011. The oldest person to ski to both Poles is Norbert H. Kern (Germany, b. 26 July 1940) who skied to the South Pole on 18 January 2007 and the North Pole on 27 April 2007 when he was 66 years 275 days old.
