Smallest motorized model car

Nippondenso of Kariya, Japan created a motorized model of Toyota’s first passenger car, the 1936 AA sedan, which is 4.785 mm. (0.188 in.) long, 1.730 mm. (0.068 in.) wide and 1.736 mm. (0.068 in.) high.  The bumper is 50 microns thick (a human hair is approx.100 microns in diameter). The motor, the coil of which is 1 mm. (0.039 in.)  in diameter, powers the car to a top speed of 0.018 km./h. (0.011 m.p.h.).

Smallest purpose-built cinema in operation

The smallest purpose-built cinema is the Cabiria Cine-Cafe which measures 24 m² (258.3 ft²) and has a seating capacity of 18. It was built by Renata Carneiro Agostinho da Silva (Brazil) in Brasilia DF, Brazil in 2008. The Cabiria Cine-Cafe is an officially registered cinema (with ANCINE the Agencia Nacional do Cine) and is still in operation, it recently held a film festival in November 2009. The smallest permanent licensed bar in the world is the “Blomberger Saustall”, which has a total internal floor area of 5.19 m² (55 ft² 124.5 in²). It is owned by Reinhold Mennecke (Germany) and became fully licensed in 2000.

Smallest periodic table

As a birthday gift to Professor Martyn Poliakoff in December 2010, scientists at the University of Nottingham, UK, used an ion beam writer and electron microscope to carve the periodic table of elements on to a single hair from his head. The table measures just 89.67 x 46.39 microns and approximately one million would fit on a post-it note.

Smallest paper money

The smallest national note ever issued was the 10-bani note of the Ministry of Finance of Romania in 1917. It measured (printed area) 27.5 x 38 mm (1.08 x 1.49 in). This is roughly one tenth the size of a US$1 banknote. Of German Notgeld, the smallest were the 1/3 pfg notes of Passau (1920-1), measuring 18 x 18.5 mm (0.7 x 0.72 in).

The smallest humanoid robot in production is the BeRobot, which measures 153 mm (6 in) high and is able to walk, kick and perform push-ups. The robot was manufactured by GeStream (Taiwan) and demonstrated at the Global SMEs Convention on 6 September 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A guitar carved from a block of silicon and based on a Fender Stratocaster, measured ten micrometres long – 1/20 the thickness of human hair. Made in 1997 in just twenty minutes by scientists at the Cornell University, New York, USA, each of its six strings were 0.05 mm 1/100 in thick, equivalent to 100 atoms laid end to end.
