Southernmost permanently inhabited place

Discounting Antarctic research stations, the farthest south that people permanently live on Earth is the small hamlet of Puerto Toro (55°04’59S) on the island of Navarino on the southern tip of Chile. In the last census taken in the area (2002), its population was recorded as just 36 people.

Ghazal Srinivas (India), who recorded the track in 125 different languages and released it as a double CD album entitled ‘The Path of Mahatma Gandhi’ on 2 December 2009. Smoking a pipe for the longest time without relighting

The record for smoking a pipe for the longest time without relighting belongs to Dr Lubomir Cinka (Czech Republic) who smoked his pipe continuously for 3 hr 4 min 35 sec at the 2001 World Cup in Pipesmoking Championship which was held at Ascot racecourse, Berkshire, UK, on 14 October 2001. Each contestant started with a championship briar pipe handed out by the organisers, two matches, 3g tobacco and a wooden tamper. They were sat at tables of ten with a steward at each table.

Stickiest salamander

Native to much of the USA, the world´s stickiest salamander is the northern slimy salamander (Plethodon glutinosus), which is named after the glue-like mucus that its skin secretes. This substance is so sticky that if almost any predator tries to bite the salamander, its mucus effectively seals the predator´s mouth shut.

Stair climbing by bicycle – most steps

The most steps climbed by bicycle is 2,755 and was achieved by Krystian Herba (Poland) who climbed the Eureka Tower in Melbourne, Australia, on 4 February 2014. Krystian climbed to the 77th floor, took the lift back down (while still on his bike) then climbed all the way back up to the observation deck on the 88th floor.

Stair climbing – vertical height (12 hours)

The greatest vertical height climbing stairs in 12 hours was 33,000 ft (10.06 km) by Chris Solarz (USA) climbing Three Logan Place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, on 25 June 2011. Solarz climbed the 600 ft (183 m) between floors 2-50 a total of 55 times, covering 58,080 stairs. Solarz climbed enough to reach the peak of Mount Everest and still have nearly 4,000 ft (1.22 km) to spare. Spinning top – duration

Ashrita Furman (USA) spun a spinning top for 7 hr 1 min 14 sec, before its rim made contact with the ground at The Madd Fun Arcade, Brooklyn, New York, USA, on 18 November 2006. A Korean wooden top was used.
