The joint NASA/ESA Ulysses spacecraft was launched from the space shuttle Discovery in 1990. It headed out to Jupiter where it used a gravitational slingshot to send it into a polar orbit around the Sun, from where it has directly observed both poles of the Sun.

The spacecraft ceased operations on 30 June 2009.
