Highest box-office film gross for a UK film

Although many successful Hollywood movie franchises – including Harry Potter, James Bond and Sherlock Holmes – are filmed in the UK or feature British actors, the most successful UK-produced film of all time is currently Slumdog Millionaire(2008), which has grossed $141 million (£100.6 million) in the USA and a total of $378 million (£234 million) worldwide, making it the 143rd most successful film of all time. Despite the success of Scotland-set films such as Braveheart (1995) and Trainspotting (1996), the highest-grossing film produced in Scotland remains Local Hero(1982), which took around $5.7 million (£3.7 million) at the US box office. The most successful film produced in Wales is Twin Town (1997), which took approximately £700,000 ($1.1 million) at the UK box office, and $127,900 (£77,400) in the USA. While Northern Ireland has produced few films that have made a commercial impact internationally, the Republic of Ireland has long had a healthy home-grown film industry, its biggest hit to date being The Commitments (1991), which grossed nearly $15 million (£8 million) at the US box office.
