On 13 August 1849 a piece of ice 6 m (20 ft) long was reported to have fallen from the sky in Scotland, UK. The ice was clear but looked like it was composed of smaller pieces, possibly hailstones. One possible explanation is that hailstones were fused together by a bolt of lightning. The mass of ice reportedly fell after a peal of thunder.
