The largest recorded tektite weighs 3.2 kg (7.04 lb). It was discovered in 1932 at Muong Nong, Laos and is now in the Paris Museum, France.
Tektites are glassy pieces of rock formed during the impact of large meteorites and asteroids with the Earth’s surface. They begin as molten rock which ‘splashes’ from the newly-formed impact crater. They then solidify rapidly during their flight as crater ejecta, resulting in the glassy, as opposed to crystalline, structure.
