Stromatolites have the longest fossil record of any form of life on Earth. These cauliflower-shaped, rock-like structures are formed by the activity of cyanobacteria and appeared on Earth as early as 3.5 billion years ago. In 1954 a colony of living stromatolites was discovered in Shark Bay, Australia, with forms similar to those from the Precambrian era.
