Since 1947 a total of three descendants of the Nehru-Gandhi family have become Prime Minister of India.
Jawaharlal Nehru became India’s Prime Minister when the country attained independence in Auguest 1947, and remained in power until his death in 1964.
His daughter Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 until she was assassinated by her own bodyguards on 31 October 1984.
Rajiv Gandhi, Indira’s eldest son, became Prime Minister following his mother’s death and won the 1984 elections by a landslide. He served until 1989 and was assassinated while campaigning for the premiership on 21 May 1991.
