Most expensive football player (soccer player) defender

Rio Ferdinand (UK) continued to be the world’s most expensive defender in July 2002 when he joined Manchester United from Leeds United in a deal worth £30 million ($46.9 million).

£26 million will be paid to Leeds United within the first 12 months, with £13 million payable immediately. A further maximum sum of £4 million pounds is to be paid on a deferred basis, the timing of which will be dependent upon the performance of Manchester United Football Club.
