The most heavily armed tanks in recent times have been the Russian T-64, T-72, T-80 and T-90, all of which have a 12.5 cm (4.9 in) gun-missile system. The T-90’s armament includes one 125 mm 2A46M smoothbore gun, stabilised in two axes and fitted with a thermal sleeve gun-missile system
The American Sheridan light tank mounts a 15.2 cm (6 in) weapon which is both a gun and a missile launcher combined, but this is not a long-barrelled, high-velocity gun of the conventional type. The British AVRE Centurion had a 16.5 cm (6.5 in) low-velocity demolition gun. The main armament on the US Abrams tank is the 120 mm M256 smoothbore gun, developed by Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH of Germany.
