In January 2011, it was reported that Columbian drug dealers had attempted to smuggle marijuana into a prison using a pigeon as a carrier. A 45-gramme (1.6-ounce) package was strapped to the pigeon and it was released in the direction of the Bucaramanga jail. The package, however, was too heavy for the bird, and it was found by police officers flapping on the ground near the prison. Inmates of the jail probably trained the bird, and they had been used previously to smuggle mobile phone SIM cards into the jail. A similar case was reported at a jail in Bosnia in 2008, but this case was confirmed by the police officers concerned.
