The fastest crossing of the North Sea in a double kayak is 17 hr 53 min and was achieved by Simon Worsley and Ian Castro (United Kingdom) who completed the Southwold to Zeebrugge route, on 4 July 2009. Simon Worsley was the previous record holder in this event in 1997. Ian Castro and Simon Worsley also both share the record for the single sea kayak crossing of the North Sea.
The fastest solo and unsupported crossing of the North Atlantic by sea kayak was achieved by Peter Bray (UK) in 76 days from 22 June 2001 to 5 September 2001, when he paddled from St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, to Belderrig, Ireland. His kayak Newt had a cabin 2 m (6.5 ft) long and 70 cm (27.5 in) tall at its highest point. Everything in the cabin had to be tightly strapped down, including Peter in his bed at night.
