It was recorded by severe storms researcher Tim Samaras (USA) who successfully placed an instrument probe in the path of an F4 tornado, near Manchester, South Dakota, USA on 24 June 2003. The research was supported by National Geographic (USA), Applied Research Associates (USA), the Department of Commerce (USA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USA).
The greatest flow of any river in the world is that of the Amazon, which discharges an average of 200,000 m³/sec (7,100,000 ft³/sec) into the Atlantic Ocean, increasing to more than 340,000 m³/sec (12,000,000 ft³/sec) in full flood. The lower 1,450 km (900 miles) average 17 m (55 ft) in depth, but the river has a maximum depth of 124 m (407 ft). The flow of the Amazon is 60 times greater than that of the Nile.
