The first series of the ITV drama Downton Abbey scored 92 out of 100 on Metacritic, making it the highest-scoring reviewer-rated show of the year. The series, conceived and written by the actor Julian Fellowes (UK), follows the lives and loves of those living upstairs and downstairs in the estate of Robert, Earl of Grantham from 1912 to ­1914.

The highest contemporary art gallery is The Nautilus, situated at 4,300 metres above sea level in the base camp of Plaza de Mulas, on the west face of Mount Aconcagua, Argentina. The gallery is privately owned and run by Miguel Doura, a painter who studied Fine Arts at the Escuela Prilidiano Pueyrredón (currently Instituto Universitario Nacional del Arte) and has a lifelong passion for mountaineering. The Nurek dam, on the river Vakhsh, Tajikistan is 300 m (984 ft) high and was completed in 1980. The Rogunskaya dam, also across the river Vakhsh, was due to reach 335 m (1098 ft) in height but the break-up of the former Soviet Union in 1991 prevented its completion.

The highest darts score by inner and outer bull’s-eyes in two minutes by a pair is 800 and was achieved by Kevin Fisher and Peter Gibbins (both UK) at The Grapes Public House in Colchester, Essex, UK, on 20 February 2014. The world’s costliest civil war, in terms of the number of lives lost during combat and in events directly relating to the war, is the Russian Civil War of 1917-22. It is estimated that the former Soviet Union lost 939,755 soldiers, and over 8 million civilians died following armed attacks, famine and disease. The highest darts score in one hour by a men’s team was 35,087 achieved by the Cork Darts Organisation (Ireland) at the St. Vincent’s GAA Club in Cork, Ireland, on 20 March 2010. The team members who participated were Martin Cotter, Damian O’Driscoll, Steven Coveney, John O’Shea, Craig Sproat, Jason Kavanaugh, Kevin McDonnell, and James Corcoran (all Ireland).

As reported by the historian Flavius Josephues (c.37-100), some 960 Jewish zealots committed suicide by cutting each others’ throats at Masada, Israel, in AD 73, as the palace was being beseiged by Romans. The men killed all the women and children, then drew lots to select ten men. The ten slew all the other men, then the ten drew lots to chose one man, who in turn killed the other nine.
