The Swedish 1 metre Solar Telescope, on La Palma in the Canary Islands, uses a mirror in the path of the sunlight that minutely changes shape a thousand times per second to counter the effects of atmospheric turbulence. It can see details on the surface of the Sun as small as 70 km across (43 miles).
The highest resolution image ever taken shows details smaller than 20 billionths of a metre across. Using a technique called near-field Raman scattering, a team led by Professor Lukas Novotny, University of Rochester, New York, USA, was able to image individual carbon nanotubes with visible light. The research was announced in March 2003.
