From 1998 to 2007, China topped the list of the largest arms importers overall, averaging an annual spend of $2,318,200,000 (£1,164,403,860). In the second place is India, followed by Taiwan, Greece and South Korea. Examining figures for just 2007, however, reveals that Greece was the largest importer, buying $2,089,000,000 (£1,049,264,768) of arms.
Of the roughly 150 impact craters identified so far on Earth, the largest is the Vredefort crater, near Johannesburg, South Africa, with an estimated diameter of around 300 km (186 miles). This huge, eroded structure was formed around two billion years ago, when an asteroid or comet collided with the Earth.
The largest image made from LED lights uses 1,012,840 lights and was created by Oltin yo’l GTL (Uzbekistan), in Shurtan, Uzbekistan, on 23 July 2012. A combination of Dura Light LEDs and free form ‘fairy light’ LEDs were used to form the image. The image depicts processes of gas to liquids production. The LED image is spread over an area of around 750,000 m ² and is displayed on the plot of land that a commercial factory will be built upon.
The largest inflatable sculpture has a volume of 1,791.11 m³ (63,252.45 ft³) and measures 60 x 20 x 7 metres (196 ft 10 in x 65 ft 7 in x 22 ft 11 in) in size. It is called “Gulliver” and was presented and measured in Taipei, Taiwan, on 20 July 2009. The sculpture is a model of the human body, with all internal organs inside. People can walk inside Gulliver and learn about the human body.
The largest inflatable beach ball is 15.82 m (51 ft 10 in) in diameter and was created by Real,- (Poland). It was presented and measured in Czluchow, Poland, on 8 May 2012. The beach ball looked like a football from the outside.
The largest indoor ski resort is Ski Dubai in the desert state of the United Arab Emirates, which opened in December 2005 with a total area of 22,500 m² (242,187 ft²) covered with up to 6,000 tonnes (13 million lb) of real snow all year around, servicing a maximum of 1,500 visitors. The largest inflorescence that typically occurs amongst plants belongs to the puya Puya raimondii, a rare species of giant bromeliad living high in the Bolivian mountains. The vertical stalk or panicle produced when the puya blooms stands up to 10.7 m (35 ft) high, with a diameter of up to 2.4 m (8 ft), and bears approximately 8,000 small white flowers. This enormous inflorescence is so strong that it can support a man if he climbs up it.
The greatest invasion in military history was the Allied land, air and sea operation against the Normandy coast of France on D-Day, 6 June 1944. On the first three days 38 convoys of 745 ships moved in, supported by 4,066 landing craft carrying 185,000 men and 20,000 vehicles, and 347 minesweepers. The air assault comprised 18,000 paratroopers from 1,087 aircraft. The 42 available divisions had air support from 13,175 aircraft. Within a month 1,100,000 troops, 200,000 vehicles and 750,000 tons of stores were landed.
