The most gold medals won consecutively in the men’s Olympic Discus competition is four, consecutively, by Al Oerter (USA) in Melbourne, Australia (1956), Rome, Italy (1960), Tokyo, Japan (1964) and Mexico City, Mexico (1968).

Jamaican sprinter Merlene Ottey won nine Olympic 100 m and 200 m medals – three silver and six bronze – between the 1980 Games in Moscow, Russia, and the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia. The bronze won in the individual 100 m in Sydney was awarded in 2009, after the gold medallist, Marion Jones (USA), was stripped of her title due to a drugs offence.

In November 2005, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), introduced their five official mascots for the 2008 Games – the highest number since the competition began. The country with the most official languages is the Republic of South Africa with 11. These are: English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, Setswana, Sepedi, Xitsonga, siSwati, isiNdebele and Tshivenda. The population of South Africa is 43,792,000 (2001). Most northerly marathon

The North Pole Marathon has been held annually since 2002, and the course at the geographic North Pole has been certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races. The fastest men’s completion time to date is 3 hr 36 min 10 sec by Thomas Maguire (Ireland) in the 2007 marathon, and the fastest woman is Cathrine Due (Denmark) in 5 hr 37 min 14 sec in the 2008 marathon.

The most noodle portions prepared in 3 minutes is 8 and was achieved by Fei Wang (China) of Inn Noodle (London) at Borough Market, London, United Kingdom, on 10 October 2008. Fei went head to head against Michelin Star chef Gordon Ramsay (United Kingdom) as part of Gordon Ramsay’s Cookalong. Gordon only managed to make 3 bowls in 3 minutes.
