The largest salsa dance consisted of 1686 dancers was achieved by ITESCO at an event organised by the Secretaría de Turismo Coatzacoalcos at Carnaval Coatzacoalcos 2012, in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico on 24 March 2012
All the dancers were students of ITESCO a local university aged between 19-25, only a handful were trained dancers with the majority preparing in the weeks building up to the record attempt with the help of instructors. During the attempt itself these instructors were positioned along the line of dancers to monitor the students and ensure they danced in time. The group formed a single ‘comparsa’ (dance troupe) at the Coatzacoalcos carnival and paraded for over 3 kilometres down the city’s promenade. They were formed in 281 lines of 6 people. The song they danced to was Gloria Estefan’s ‘WEPA’ which was repeated to ensure it lasted more than the minimum required 5 minutes.
