Largest swap of spies since the end of the Cold War

On 27 June 2010, a group of 10 Russian “sleeper” agents, who had been spying for the Russian Federation’s External Intelligence Agency (SVR), were arrested in New York, USA. After pleading guilty to charges of failing to register as representatives of a foreign government, they were returned to Russia, via Austria, on 8 July 2010, under the terms of what was the largest prisoner swap between Russia and a western democracy since the end of the Cold War. They were exchanged for four Russian nationals, three of whom had been convicted and imprisoned on espionage charges. One of the more notable Russian agents, Anna Chapman, has gone on to become a TV celebrity in Russia.
