Fastest speed recorded for a battleship

The US Iowa-class battleships were powered by eight fuel oil boilers and four propellers, delivering 212,000 shaft horsepower. In 1968, during a shakedown cruise, the Iowa-class USS New Jersey achieved a top speed of 35.2 knots (65.2 km/h) which it sustained for six hours. As part of a brutal test of the ship’s engines, the captain then ordered the ship to go instantly from “all ahead flank” to “all back emergency”. New Jersey took some two miles to come to a stop.

Fastest speed reached in a wing suit

The fastest speed reached in a wing suit is 363 km/h (225.6 mph) and was achieved by Shinichi Ito (Japan) over Yolo County, California, USA, on 28 May 2011. Mr Ito was equipped with full HALO (High Altitude, Low Opening) equipment, ‘Gamine Colorado 300’ GPS, ‘Altitrack’ Skydiving computer and ‘Vampire 3’ wing suit manufactured by Phoenix Fly Inc. Fastest speed possible

The fastest speed possible in the universe is the speed of light. This is achieved only by light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation, ie radio waves, X-rays, infrared radiation etc. The speed of light actually varies depending what it is travelling through. It is fastest when travelling through a vacuum where its velocity is 299,792,458 m/s (983,571,056 ft/sec). This means that, when you look at the Moon, you see it as it was about 1.3 seconds ago, and the Sun around 8.3 minutes ago. Continue reading →
